I am having trouble getting the AllWebMenus Pro (AWMP) to show up on WordPress (WP) 3.8 web site. The web site is on an internal server so I cannot send direct links, but I can send files of code or code snippets as necessary.

On the WP template file header.php, I have a <nav> element with id="site-navigation". When I publish the menu in AWMP I choose to position the menu relative to an Element with Custom ID: site-navigation. I install the compiled menu zip file successfully through the WP plugin, but the menu does not show up.

The name of the menu assigned in WP matches the name of the menu I enter into the AWM plugin, and the menu settings in the plugin are:

* Menu is populated from an existing "Wordpress menu"

* Menu type is Dynamic

* Location is Theme Menu Location: primary.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hello Rod,

You need to change the Menu Positioning in AlWebMenus Pro and set it to Relative to an Element with the Default ID.

WordPress menu positioning method

menu positioning in AllWebMenus Pro

Then, you need to re-compile your menu project for WordPress and re-upload the zip file through the AllWebMenus WP plugin admin panel.

This way it should appear on your site.

Let me know how that worked for you.

Making good progress. Have two issues remaining:

1) The existing wordpress menu appears behind my AWM as a white box. Is there a way to remove the white box or WordPress menu (and keep the links to AWM)?  The white menu is not AWM, but WordPress. I've tried setting the menu background (in WordPress) to a transparent image, but that seems to be ignored and/or it doesn't expect transparency. At worst I can remake every AWM image to be larger so it covers the white background, but this is a minor pain. I had hoped AWM would "replace" the existing menu.

2) When you select a page, the old WordPress menu changed the color of the menu item to indicate you were in that page. For example, when at the Home page, the "Home" text was in a different color. With AWM there is no indication of what page you are in. Is there an option to handle this without having to add tags to every page in the site?

Hello,

1) You just have to disable the WordPress menu from WordPress. The AllWebMenus-WordPress plugin will take the menu structure directly from the database, regardless of the visibility status of the specific WordPress menu.

2) You can achieve this using the “Automatic Highlight” option:

Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi,

I couldn’t find any way to disable the menu in WordPress (only delete). If deleted, only the AWM menu edges appear, but there are no AWM items to select. (I upload the AWM zip after each test, since it goes away when the menu is changed).

wordpress menu is not appeared properly

I partly solved it by using a transparent background on the theme’s menu and modifying the theme templete’s CSS (yes a bad way to do it, but I have no intention of loading any theme updates).  Image above has the transparency trick applied to get rid of the WordPress White menu background.  While the menu is really still there under AWM, it’s no longer seen except for a flicker of the selected menu item or if you hover near the bottom of AWM (since the old menu extends 5 pixels below AWM).  I guess I’ll look for the menu php code inside WordPress and try and modify it.  Are you aware of any other tricks to getting rid of the existing menu, yet having AWM work?

The auto-highlight option works great! Thanks.

Rather minor, but is there a way to have each button’s width set to a fixed size (but auto-adjusted to fill the total menu width)?  I see in Main Items Style, Size, it’s either Auto or a fixed value, but the fixed value is not an ideal way to do it.  I’m looking for some Global option to auto-adjust the size to fill the menu area BUT in a way each button’s width is the same. If there is no option for this, I can experiment with fixed size that gets it close to the full width.

Dear Frank,

Regarding hiding the menu, you should be able to do this by simply not selecting any menu to show:

select no wordpress menu to show

Regarding the menu items having the same size, you can achieve this with the “Uniform Items” property inside the “Menu Type” options:

uniform property - same size menu items

When I started learning how to use the menus in WordPress I had the menu type as Dynamic and the links showed up in the page source. Now I have the menu type as Static and the links do not show up in the page source.
Is there any way to use the Static menu setting and display the links in the page source?
Thank you,
Sheldon

Reply From: Likno Customer Support

Dear Sheldon,

“Static” means that you have defined the structure in AllWebMenus. Did you do this? When you changed the menu from “Dynamic” to “Static”, did you re-import the menu? if not, then you should do this now.

Hi Kostas,

I did re-import the menu. Are the links supposed to show in the source of the page?

Thank you,

Sheldon

Reply From: Likno Customer Support

No. If you use “Static” then the links are only visible within the “menu.js” file.

You can make the links show in the source if you turn the project to ULLI or CSS.

When I protect a page that has one of your menus on it , the menu does not display on the protected page.  I have tried this  on two different sites using two different themes.  The native WordPress menus work fine on protected pages, but yours do not display.

I searched your knowledge base and did not find any posts on this subject.

Thank you,
Bruce

Hello again,

I just checked your site and it seems that the menu does not have any items. Are you sure that in your WordPress menu setting you have these items set to be visible in protected pages? I mean, if you did not have AllWebMenus, would the standard WordPress menu show at all?

I just checked my site and the menu is properly populated and working every except for the protected directory; and, yes the standard WordPress menu works fine on the protected page.  I had checked this using two different themes (responsive and Graphene ) with the same results – standard WordPress works fine, and your does not on protected pages.

Dear Bruce,

As I said in a previous email, the problem is that the menu is never populated, so this seems to be an issue related to the WordPress plugin.

I will try to replicate the problem in a local server and will let you know as soon as I have something.

OK – I figured out what I was doing wrong.  I misunderstood  what hide password-protected
items meant.  I unchecked the box and now things work as expected.  I hope that I did not waste
too much of your time.

Initial Email Subject: latest wordpress plugin? or latest AWM? or latest WordPress?
Support Case Month: October 2012

Hello Likno

I intended to update the menu for one of my sites, but before doing so, thought it would be a good idea if I downloaded the latest allwebmenus (5.3-898-4) and the latest wordpress plugin (AllWebMenus WordPress Menu Plugin v1.1.14). I also updated wordpress to the latest version (WordPress 3.4.2.). All of a sudden my menu disappeared. I have been trying to solve this for most of the morning without success.

Eventually I set up a brand new site with nothing on it except an allwebmenus menu  and the latest vanilla wordpress to see what was going on and immediately it appears that the menu has located itself behind everything. (See test site http://www.estilinisteel.com/).

Immediately I attempted to adjust the Z-index number but it doesn't matter what number I use from 9999 to 100 to 1 to 0 to -100 - nothing works.

Can you help?

Thanks

Dave

Dear Dave,

I checked your test page and it seems that the menu is set to have “z-index: 2”!

Wordpress Menu Z-index issue

Are you sure that you changed the z-index to a higher value and compiled and uploaded the menu properly? Changing the z-index manually did bring the menu to the front in my tests.

Hello Kostas

Thanks for your reply.

I have just changed the awm zindex to 1000 in menu.js

If you go to the test site http://www.estilinisteel.com/ you will see that the menu is STILL behind the main wordpress Banner image.

No, it’s not a cache problem or finger trouble :-)

I’m stuck!

I keep thinking there is something that I have overlooked. Please take another look.

Thanks and Greetings

Dave

Dear Dave,

I found the following in your “style.css”:

clip_image002[5]

This applies to the header element and everything below it, hence it goes over the menu.

Please try changing this to something smaller and give the menu a z-index of 9999 to fix the problem.

Excellent detective work, Kostas

That does indeed fix it.

Please be aware that this was not my stylesheet but  a wordpress file from their latest version – 3.4.2_2

You are therefore likely to come across this query quite often in future.

I wouldn’t much like your job! :)

Thanks again, I’ll go and repair my real site now.

Thanks and Greetings

Dave
