Hi,

I currently have your All Web Menu program and I use it to build my drop down menu on my web site. I have three questions...

1. I just got a new computer with Windows 7 Professional, and an i7 processor. I want to know If I can get an updated version of your program, and to see if I qualify for a free upgrade, if not, how do I go about getting a new version and how much is it?

I use many titles of your software, is there a suite or group I can get a deal on?

2. With the new computer, I also got new versions of software. One being Adobe Design and Web Premium CS6. It has many tiles one being Dreamweaver. So I want to know if All Web Menu program will work with the Dreamweaver version I have?

3. Does All Web Menu program work with CSS?, and if yes, after building the menu in your program, where do you insert the code on your CSS page? In my last site I used tables and no CSS this site I was only going to use CSS. Please let me know if this is possible.

Thank you,

Robert

Dear Robert,

1) The Update Plan of your AllWebMenus license expires on September, so you can get all the versions we release until then for free. Just login to your User Area, download AllWebMenus and get a new Activation Code for it using the new Installation ID it will have.

The same applies for Button Maker which does not require an Update Plan at all (as it is only supported for bugs for the last couple of years and there are no plans for further development).

According to our database, you only use these two applications. If you want to also purchase the rest of our products (Modal Windows, Accordions, Tabs, Tooltips, Scrollers, Trees) please state which products you are interested in and I will ask for a discounted quote from our sales department. To see the current prices, check out the standard purchase page:

http://www.likno.com/awmregister.php

2) Yes, the latest AllWebMenus fully supports Dreamweaver CS6.

3) The latest AllWebMenus is capable of creating “pure” CSS menus. These of course do not have the full flexibility of JavaScript menus, but they have the advantages of CSS menus (e.g. extremely light and fast, easily edited through the CSS file, with ULLI structure in page, main menu still works with JavaScript disabled etc).

The CSS is stored in two separate files (one for standard CSS and one for CSS3 features).

I suggest that you read the instructions within the application for more details and to see which features are supported for CSS menus:

css menu or javascript menu option

Let me know if you need more help with something.

Kostas

Hi Again,

I have downloaded the All Web Pro and had a few questions with the CSS version of things.

I created a test site. I made a rule of #awmULLI-menu, then linked it to a file that was generated when I compiled the menu called menu.css, then created a <div> tag called navebar. With all this still I can not see the menu on my page?

I have read many help files and it sounds like you loose a lot of the program when using CSS. I know it will create the menu, then I would edit the CSS file to change things.

Do you have instructions on how to create and link up a CSS menu?

Do you think a CSS site is worse then a table site?

I thought CSS was better?

You had made a menu that I paid you to make, do you do this for CSS style menus?

Please let me know.

Thanks Again!

Indeed the CSS menu is much more restricted than the JS menu (for example all CSS items/submenus must have the same size and you cannot have “customized” items). This is because the CSS uses a different technology that makes it “lighter” but this does not allow for several “tricks” that we use in our JS menus.

A CSS site is definitely better than a table site, but you do not have to use a CSS menu with it.

Regarding the menu you made and cannot see, I will need you to send me the URL so that I can check on what you did. The general instructions are:

1) compile and link the menu to your pages

2) add the ULLI structure into all of your pages

3) upload the compiled menu files

Finally, yes we also make custom CSS menus if this is what you require. We will of course need a detailed specification the menu you want us to build in order to give you a specific quote.

Hi Kostas,

1) Where do I find the ULLI Structure?

2) Does the program create this ULLI Structure or is it something I will have to build?

3) Do you always have to upload all your files before they will work or can you just use them on your local drive until you are ready?

Please let me know.

Thanks you again!

Dear Robert,

You can get a UL/LI structure that corresponds to your menu from AllWebMenus and copy-paste it to your pages:

ul li menu structure

If you want to view your menu in local pages, then you do not need to upload anything. You need to put the compiled menu files into your local site.

Hi Kostas,

Yes, I did try this but the menu never showed up on the page.

I posted it into the <div> the I gave an "ID" of "navBar" and what I find is either I see the code on my page for the menu or I see nothing. This is why I was asking if there was I specific way to do this. Do you just post the UL/LI code into the page where you want it to show up for example make a <div> tag and put the UL/LI code into it. or do you just post the ID or Class "awmULLI-menu" into the <div> tag? I got the (awmULLI-menu) from the Project Properties, Menu Structure Source. This is where I found the UL/IL code to post in my page.

Do you have any instructions on how to place the UL/LI tag from the All Web Menu program in to a web page using CSS?

I have tried many things and nothing is working. All the web pages I find on this just tell me to build a menu in the code, BUT your program does this, but I don't know how to put it in my web page?

Please let me know. Thank you again!

Robert

Hi Kostas,

Here is a link to my test site.

http://www.elegantoccasionscatering.com/test/

1. The background is yellow, the header is orange and the menu bar is green this is where I put the <div id="awmULLI-menu"> this is where the menu is to go.

2. When I look at the page in design view all the colors are in order orange, green, yellow. When I go to live view the green goes all the way to the bottom of the page and hugs the left margin? (this is what I can not figure out) I have all three ID tags set with a left margin to "auto" right margin to "auto" and top and bottom margins left empty with no value in them. This will center my page.

3. Lastly the menu still will not show up. I have read all your help notes and feel I have it correct. The only thing I feel I maybe wrong on is  how the UL/LI tag comes into play. What tag should it be put into or how and where do you place it in to the code. This is were I feel the problem is. The help notes are not that clear on this. Do I make a <div> tag for the menu to go in to? OR a <div> tag with id="awmULLI-menu or a class with a name called "menu"? There is no specific location to put the UL/LI tags?

I hope this helps. Please let me know. It is correct that I can build a menu in your program and then link the page and then post the code into the page and then it should work as the other menus I have used, correct?

Lastly, I have changed the size in the "sub groups" from auto to a size. I cant go to big because the menus get all choppy looking. Is there a specific size to set them to?

Please advise me on how to fix this as I really need your help. Thank you again!

NOTE: Will your program called the "Button Maker" work with CSS or is there an upgrade I need to get?

Sincerely,

Robert

Dear Robert,

I checked your page and the first thing I noticed is that you are using an ID twice:

duplicated menu code

This is considered as invalid HTML and can cause various issues. Please change the ID of the DIV to correct this problem.

Hi Kostas,

I must apologize for all the emails, but I have been trying to figure all this out. All Web Menu works a bit different then what I have used to with tables. I believe I may have some of it all worked out. Please answer my other email as well as this one as this entire weekend I will be rebuilding my web site and need confirmation and answers. (Thank you)

This is what I did, please let me know if it is correct...

I have rebuilt another test page

Built a new menu.

Changed the width from auto to a px size.

Positioned it relative to an element, and made my own ID

Compiled it as Ul/LI

Posted the structure code from my project (not the sample) in to the ID tag for the menu

Posted it all on the server and tested it

Here it is: http://www.elegantoccasionscatering.com/final/final.html

Is this Correct?

If you look at the menu it goes across the top of the page. You will see 6 items (home, new packages and so on) I know using CSS you can not set the width to "Auto" I have to have the width set to a px amount. The thing I do not like about this is all the boxes look different and not so uniformed. Please note the "Home" button it looks like it is over in left field kind of lost. How can I fix this to look more uniformed?

In my last emails one of the points I mentioned was the menus did not show up? I compared a couple of tests I did and I noticed that the code that All Web Menu put in the top of the page put it out side the "body" tag. In the above example link you will notice it is at the start of the body tag. Why in my other test pages it was put out side the body tag? Is there a setting with in All Web Menu, that I can set so it will always go to the correct spot?

Lastly, does the Button Maker Pro work with CSS or is there an upgrade I need to get?

Please, check all my emails. Thank you again!

Sincerely,

Robert

I checked your final page, and the menu seems fine here too.

Regarding making menu items look more unified, I would suggest to center the text:

main menu style

Regarding the position of the Linking Code, our tests have shown that CSS menus work better if the Linking Code is within the <head> instead of the <body>, hence the difference you see.

This is NOT the reason you did not see your menu. The only difference would be that the menu loads a fraction of a second faster.

Again, regarding Button Maker – no need to update, it works fine with CSS sites.

Hi Kostas,

Here is the test site that I have been working on. My question is I am using CSS and I put the UL/LI code in the site. What I am finding is that there is a big delay when loading the page and there is not much on the page yet. Is is correct to say the CSS style menu should load faster?

Here is a link to the test site:

http://www.elegantoccasionscatering.com/test/eo/eo1.html

Also, this is has nothing to do with support, but I was wondering if I can get your personal option on the company logo. The question is do you like the leafs on or off the rose? Just click on the link above, then click on the link on the page and you will see the two options. (click back and forth) If you let me know I would appreciate it.

Thanks Again!

Robert

Dear Robert,

Actually the difference between a ULLI menu and one that is populated in AllWebMenus, is that the ULLI menu will not show until the full page has loaded.

Your page indeed takes some time to load. The most important reason for this seems to be your Facebook image:

http://www.elegantoccasionscatering.com/test/eo/eo_images/facebook_logo.png

This is a huge image that takes a lot of time to download and blocks the whole page. You should resize the actual image file to have the size it is used for.

It is not accurate to say that the CSS menu will load faster than a JS menu. The CSS menu is faster and lighter once it is loaded, and it is also faster to load, but it will only start loading after the full page has finished loading. The JS menu starts loading immediately and may finish loading before the page has finished, hence before the CSS menu has even started loading. (I understand this is kind of confusing, so I hope I explained it clearly enough)

Finally, as a personal opinion, I probably prefer the rose without leaves. Leaves would probably look good if they were a bit lower, but the one you have has the leaves very close to the top so they through the image off-balance.

Hi Kostas,

Thank you very much for the update and for your personal opinion on the logo, it was very much appreciated.

1. I wanted to get something clear. In your opinion is it better to use a JS menu in a web site, due to the fact that you get the full function of it?  What is really the benefit of inserting the CSS?

2. To confirm placement of a JS menu...

When using a JS menu in your site you go to, "Menu Positioning", then choose "Relative To Element", then copy the "Default ID" awmAnchor-menu, then place that "ID Name" or "Custom Name" in the <div> tag you want your menu to show up in. Is this all correct?

3. You mentioned in your last email that when using a CSS menu and having to place the ULLI code into the page things are okay. BUT when you change the menu you have to replace the ULLI code in every page?

4. In my last web site I used the JS menu. I place the ID of the menu in the page. Then if I had a change, I would compile the new menu, link it to the index.html page and the entire site would be updated. Will this still work using the JS menu, BUT "will not" work using the CSS menu?  This is because the menu ID never changes, but with the CSS the code changes with the new change to the menu, correct?

This should be all my questions for now. You have been very helpful with all my needs. Thank you again!

Sincerely,

Robert

1) JS is much easier to implement and supports more features. I believe it is perfect for your case. The CSS is required if you have a huge menu and speed is crucial, or if you want to have a different menu in each page, but it also requires that you know what you are doing.

2) Yes, this sounds about right.

3) Yes, with CSS you need to edit the menu in the pages – not in AllWebMenus. This means more work for you, and more possible traps for errors. I highly recommend that you go with the JS version.

Hi Kostas,

Thank you very much for answering all my questions. I believe I will be going with the JS menus. I am getting better with CSS, but it seems such a waste of time to have to change the ULLI code on every page in your site when you edit a menu. Why would someone do that when they have the JS option?  My new site will be about 45 pages or so. So I think your right less work for me.

QUESTION:

If I want to put 2 menus on the same page or in the site, will I just name the ID of the menu a different name? or Can you not use 2 different menus on one page or one site?

Thanks Again!

Robert

Dear Robert,

Yes, you can have as many menus as you want.

The only requirement, is that each menu has a different “Compiled menu name”:

custom compile menu name
