Initial Email Subject: web modal window > modal window jumps slightly to the right on pages with vertical scroll
Support Case Month: August 2012
Hello,
After updating to the new version (build #250), when opening a modal window on a page with the browser vertical scrollbar (on a scrolling page), the modal window 'jumps' slightly to the right as the vertical scrollbar now disappears to leave place to the overlay.
This only happens when an effect is selected in the style editor (for example, slide down). If 'shows instantly' is selected, there is no movement to the right.
PS: The previous version didn't show this behavior as the vertical scrollbar wasn't covered (the overlay only applied to the page itself, not the browser vertical scrollbar).Thanks.

Hello,
We just uploaded a new version (build 250.3) which fixes the modal “jumping” issue when closing with an effect. In your email you refer to the problem appearing when opening the modal, but I only saw this when closing it, so I assume that this is what you meant.
Please let me know if the problem remains with the new build.

Hello,
Thanks for that. Unfortunately, it is still showing the same behavior with this version (tested with recent versions of Firefox and IE). Basically, with the web browser scrolling bar on the right (on a long page), when opening the modal window, the scrollbar disappears so it jumps slightly to the right when opening to compensate. And when closing the modal window, its jumps to the left as the scrollbar returns. But when using shows instantly/disappears instantly (no effect), the problem disappears.
I have posted a short video here if that can help:

Hello again,
I viewed your video, and I see exactly what I see in my own pc, so I guess I misunderstood your email before.
The page itself, does “jump” as the scroller is removed and added back. The modal window does not “jump” at all, as it appears only after the scrollbar is removed and it disappears before the scrollbar is added again.
The same thing is visible irrespectively of the effect you use (instant, fade, slide or glide).
This feature was recently added at the request of a user. Do you consider this to be a problem? If so, we can add an option for it, so that you are both happy.

Hi,
Yes, an option would be really great as I have a long page of screenshots opening case studies windows on one of my sites and I feel that the page 'jump' maybe annoying for the users when repeated...
I was just wondering why this only happens when an effect (any effect) is selected but not happening at all when no effect is selected? And what is the advantage of it might be?
Many thanks for the great support.
Kind Regards,
Christophe

Dear Christophe,
I do not understand… You keep saying that you do not see the “jump” when there is no effect, but there is no difference in the behavior! The scrollbar is removed in both cases, and the page “jumps” in both cases. With or without an effect. Do you see something different? Can you make another video to display this?

Kostas

Hi,
Sorry, my mistake... you are absolutely right, the behavior is exactly the same. It just doesn't seem to 'jump' because the delay when displaying the effect is no there anymore - the opening of the window is instant so one doesn't have the time to see the page jump.

Christophe

Dear Christophe,
We have just released a new version of Modal Windows (build 250.4) which no longer removes the scrollbars by default. Instead there is a new Project Property group named “Under the Hood” within which you can find an option to remove the scrollbars if this is the desired behavior.
Please download the new version and let us know if everything is ok.
